WHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK?

Neurofeedback (NFB), also called “brain training” or “peak performance training,” is a type of brain help that uses real-time displays of brain activity— via electroencephalography (EEG), to teach self-regulation of brain function. Typically, sensors are placed on the scalp and ears to measure electromagnetic brain energy emitting from the scalp as brain activity is detected in all parts of the brain providing measurements which can be displayed on video and/or sound.

ABOUT NEUROPTIMAL® DYNAMICAL NEUROFEEDBACK ADVANCED BRAIN TRAINING SYSTEM

1. NeurOptimal® is completely safe and effective because it is designed to work best with your individual brain. It does not attempt to “fix” predetermined conditions or pin down specific problems. This are limitations to many other neurofeedback systems that are linear and involve more potential for human error on the part of a trainer expected to manually trigger technology to provide feedback to the trainee at very specific given times during a session. Often, in this manner, resolving one problem in one area could cause problems elsewhere. At the heart of the NeurOptimal® Dynamical Neurofeedback- is the fact that it is a proprietary neuroscience-based technology specifically designed with the naturally non-linear function of the human brain in mind. NeurOptimal® is built to harness the incredibly dynamic nature of your brain in ways other systems simply cannot accomplish. As a result, this neurofeedback system can be used effectively to address a wide array of complaints without specifically “targeting” them from the outset of the training with mapping the brain and such.

2. NeurOptimal® neurofeedback is extremely safe. Research shows your own brain “knows best” and therefore the NeurOptimal® brain training system does not force or “push” the brain in any one direction nor does it determine or know the origin and content of anyone’s personal thoughts. Basically, Dynamical Neurofeedback® provides your brain with the information or feedback in the form of music interruptions that allow the brain to use it like a “mirror” to notice itself in its most adaptive and optimal brain phase in the cycle to train it to be more flexible and adaptive with balance that it needs in order to correct itself and function at its very best. NeurOptimal® simply enables your own brain’s natural tendency when given the chance to self-correct.

3. NeurOptimal® requires no effort on the user’s part. Some brain training systems require the user to “interact” by playing games or solve puzzles during sessions. This additional level of interaction is unnecessary with the NeurOptimal® neurofeedback system which may be considered something like B.F. Skinner’s “Operant-Conditioning” automatically by training with NeurOptimal®. During a training session, you can simply relax and enjoy!

HOW DOES NEUROPTIMAL® WORK?

NeurOptimal® measures and analyzes the dynamical variability of the electrical activity in the brain by comparing it to itself in a specific time frame of 256 readings/sec. Using this information NeurOptimal® informs the brain on what it just did by interrupting the music the client is listening to and helping the brain to self-regulate its own activity in an unconscious manner. A flexible brain can easily shift from one state to another while a dysregulated brain might get stuck in a specific state if it does not have the flexibility to shift and adjust to a specific situation. NeurOptimal® training focuses on improving the brain’s resilience and flexibility, thereby assisting it in leading to a reduction in problems and issues.

WHAT IS A SESSION EXPERIENCE LIKE?

Arrive for your 45-minute scheduled session, 33 minutes of which involves the actual training. Seated relaxed in reclining chair (in a darkened room if preferred with whomever you’d like present with you) in front of a large screen displaying vibrant, colorful, beautiful ever-changing images and shapes while listening to calming music in our supplied personally-assigned earbuds. A few minutes on either side of training is required for completing feedback forms and getting connected and disconnected from the EEG brain phase sensors. A Certified NeurOptimal® trained neurofeedback trainer will place the EEG sensors on the top of the head and clip them to the ears with a bit of conductive paste to carry the electromagnetic energy from the brain to the computer. Brief interruptions in the music are triggered when your brain is detected to hit peak performance phases allowing the brain to “see” what it is doing (feedback) at the right moment repeatedly during the session. The interruptions in music reinforce the brain’s achieving its optimal state until after several sessions the brain learns and acquires the flexibility/neuroplasticity to automatically adjust and self-correct becoming a generalized way of being in one’s day to day life. Dare we call it something like “Mindfulness” automatically? The skill is shown to continually improve after it “sticks” (no return of previous complaints) once we decide to begin spacing apart the time between training sessions. One complete course of training is all that is needed for life. One must train for at least one session per week, up to 3-4 if desired, for between approximately 20-40 total sessions, with additional sessions sometimes required for those with developmental challenges or more pervasive age-related neurological decline. Monthly rental machines may be available for at-home self-training sessions based on availability of machines. As a therapist, using neurofeedback training while talking with clients in a combined therapy session has enabled clients to reach inner depths of emotional and psychological pain to enhance their tolerance for it in sessions. This rapidly allows for the tolerance necessary for resolution of deep long-standing issues or for just having more mental clarity and awareness of the material being addressed due to better emotion regulation during training. If you think that you would like to engage counseling services as well, please contact Daniel Zykorie, LCSW, LLC at (732) 866-8611.
